There is no doubt that this book contains very complete coverage of Ubuntu. My only question is, who wants it? The new user, never exposed to Linux before, is going to be scared off by the more technical parts of the book. The more experienced user who wants to find out about Ubuntu is going to be bored and annoyed by the coverage of basics (that coverage is very good, byt the way, as is the more technical stuff later). I think the only person who'd truly treasure this would be someone
seeking Ubuntu certification.. for that purpose, this would be perfect. My feeling is that this should have been split into two books.. it's too darn big and clumsy anyway, and I just don't feel that you can successfully mix basics and advanced configuration and usage. However, if none of that bothers you, if you are the type who wants it all, baby steps right on up to full administration and beyond, well, this is your book for sure!Brief Contents: 2 Installation Overview 3 Step-by-Step Installation PART II Getting Started with Ubuntu Linux 4 Introduction to Ubuntu Linux 5 The Linux Utilities 6 The Linux Filesystem 7 The Shell 8 Linux GUIs: X and GNOME 9 The Bourne Again Shell 10 Networking and the Internet 11 Programming the Bourne Again Shell 12 System Administration: Core Concepts 13 Files, Directories, and Filesystems 14 Downloading and Installing Software 15 Printing with CUPS 16 Building a Linux Kernel 17 Administration Tasks 18 Configuring a LAN 19 OpenSSH: Secure Network Communication 20 FTP: Transferring Files Across a Network 21 exim4: Setting Up Mail Servers, Clients, and More 22 NIS: Network Information Service 23 NFS: Sharing Filesystems 24 Samba: Linux and Windows File and Printer Sharing 25 DNS/BIND: Tracking Domain Names and Addresses 26 firestarter and iptables: Setting Up a Firewall 27 Apache: Setting Up a Web Server Download free ebook on Linux: Prentice Hall A Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux
