Chapter 1 - Introduction - This book looks at the issues and provides detailed coverage of the key protocols and architectures that will support Converged Multimedia Networks.Chapter 2 - Call Control in the NGN - This chapter examines the evolution of networks towards the converged multimedia Next-generation Network (NGN) and considers the properties of call control in both the traditional PSTN and in the new converged networks. Chapter 3 - Securing the Network and the Role of Session Border Gateways - This chapter looks at security implications of running the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), and its successor services over the packet network-based Next Generation Network (NGN). Chapter 4 - The NGN and the PSTN - At the time of writing, the PSTN was still the dominant technology for telecommunications in most parts of the world. Chapter 5 - Evolution of Mobile Networks and Wireless LANs - The Service Provider’s ability to survive and grow in the market rests on being able to quickly and easily implement new IP-based services onto the network – this is currently the Service Provider’s most important objective, and the IMS is designed with exactly this in mind. Chapter 6 - Value-added Services - This chapter describes how higher-level “value-added” services are delivered through a converged multimedia network. Chapter 7 - Core Network Architecture - This chapter presents trends in the evolution of the architecture for the core of the converged multimedia network. Chapter 8 - Guaranteeing Quality of Service in the NGN - This chapter describes how resources are managed in the next generation network (NGN) so that Quality of Service (QoS) can be achieved to enable service differentiation.
