Part 1: Final Cut Pro in Context is the most theoretical and historical section. Its goal is to bring all readers up to speed with some basic history about motion picture editing and Final Cut Pro, and also to define the idea of the workflow.Parts 2 and 3 are more specific, but they rest on the principles explored in this part. Readers who are already familiar with Final Cut Pro, or have a long history with postproduction in general, will probably be familiar with some of this information. However, readers who come to this book with postproduction knowledge based mostly on FCP (or the opposite: old postproduction hands new to this software) will find Part 1 especially useful to fill in the gaps in their knowledge and put everything into context. Part 2: Roles, Technologies, and Techniques is the guts of the book: the practical instruction. Each chapter in this part breaks apart a particular stage of the postproduction process, offering specific information and instruction on FCP techniques and workflow methods. The chapters can be read as a refresher, or used in the studio as a problemsolving guide. Some of them give instruction on advanced techniques that often fall outside the scope of a manual or even a traditional software book: how to upload video files for online review, how to work with a vendor for finishing work, or how to decide whether it is reasonable to do that work on your own with Final Cut Pro. Part 3: Real-World Workflows takes the ideas from Part 1 and the techniques from Part 2 and shows how they really play out in projects. These case studies highlight the importance (and, ultimately, the limitations) of workflow thinking and of good planning in general.
