Chapter 1. Why Mac OS X?The focus of this brief chapter is a look at the history of Mac OS X and an overview of the ups and downs of troubleshooting the OS. Chapter 2. Using Mac OS X: An Overview If you're largely unfamiliar with Mac OS X, this chapter should bring you up to speed. You'll take a basic tour of the major features in the Mac OS X Finder, Dock, and Desktop. Chapter 3. Installing, Upgrading, Backing Up, and Restoring Mac OS X For all of these occasions, this chapter explains what needs to be done (and why) and offers solutions to a variety of potential problems. Chapter 4. Mac OS X in Depth Taking apart and examining the components of Mac OS X is the subject of this chapter. Chapter 5. Crash Prevention and Recovery In this chapter, I'll cover all of these variations of crashes and freezes. I'll tell you how best to recover from them and offer some tips on how to prevent them. Chapter 6. Problems with Files: Opening, Copying, Deleting, and Beyond This chapter covers the most common problems you're likely to face as a Mac OS X user: those that occur when opening and saving files, copying and moving files, and deleting files. Chapter 7. Troubleshooting Printing In this chapter, I'll show you how printing works in Mac OS X and what to do when it doesn't. Chapter 8. Troubleshooting Networking This chapter focuses on setting up your Mac to access data over the Internet and/or a local network, using various System Preferences panes and other software. Chapter 9. Troubleshooting File Sharing and the Internet In this chapter, I cover the most common practical applications of having set up a network. Chapter 10. Unix for Mac OS X Users For those users with little or no background in Unix, who may have felt a bit mystified by what was going on in the above examples, this chapter explains the basics. Chapter 11. Troubleshooting the iApps This chapter is an exception: It focuses on a specific collection of applications from Apple that are referred to as the iAppsbecause their names all begin with i.
