1 Concepts of Deployment - This chapter introduces you to the basics of different deployment technologies. It will also discuss benefits and drawbacks of different deployment methods.2 The Big Picture - The intent of this chapter is to explain the fundamental technological terms that are used when discussing Remote Installation Services. 3 Installing Remote Installation Services Server - This chapter will explain how to install and configure Remote Installation Services. 4 Client Installation - This chapter is about the client installation procedure and provides a walkthrough of the different options clients have when using RIS server images. 5 Slipstreaming, RBFG, and Group Policy - This chapter provides an overview of the slipstreaming process. By slipstreaming an OS, an RIS image can be installed, including a service pack. 6 The Setup Information File - In this chapter, we’ll explore the many possibilities of configuring a client installation using the answer file. We will explain how to use it, how to edit it, and how to tune it to address your specific requirements. 7 Setup Manager - This chapter covers how to install Setup Manager and how use it to create or modify SIFs. Setup Manager is a powerful tool that can help create good and correctly formatted SIFs in minutes. Setup Manager is a graphical user interface (GUI) tool that is easy to install and use. 8 Using RIPrep - This chapter covers the process of RIPrep and gives an overview of CD (flat) images versus RIPrep images. By using an RIPrep image, it’s possible to include applications, drivers, and specific configured desktops to the image and then upload it back to the RIS server. 9 Prestaging - Imagine this scenario: There is one site covering two locations, with a 2-Mbit line, and there is an RIS server in each location. Both locations serve 350 client computers. 10 Move and Backup of RIS Servers - This chapter describes how to move RIS images between volumes and servers. It also covers the process of moving an RIS server between domains and the steps involved in keeping the RIS images functioning correctly when they are moved. 11 Understanding and Identifying Devices and Drivers - This chapter discusses some of the more theoretical terms of understanding what drivers do and how they work with Microsoft Windows and with Remote Installation Services. 12 Creating and Understanding the $OEM$ Structure - Now that we have discussed driver essentials and the importance of the system information file and the driver file, let’s go into detail about how to actually make them available in Remote Installation Services, where to include the files, and how to work with Remote Installation Services once the files are available. 13 Driver Inclusion - Now that we have looked at driver fundamentals, driver characteristics, the $OEM$ folder, and its structure, let’s go into how to actually set RIS up so that the OEM drivers work. 14 Deploying Files and Software - Remote Installation Services was designed to not only have the ability to deploy an operating system, but also to deploy applications, scripts, files, and commands. 15 Working with OSC files - This chapter gives an overview of how the RIS process uses OSC files, the way they work, and how they can be modified to add more functionality to the RIS server.
