Chapter 1 - Downloading, Installing, and Customizing NetBeansThis chapter describes how to do that as well as how to check for updates and customize some NetBeans settings to suit your own preferences. Chapter 2 - The Source Editor In this chapter I attempt to introduce the core features provided in the Source Editor. The NetBeans 6 Source Editor has a similar look and feel to that of previous versions of NetBeans, but it has an entirely new underlying architecture that affects syntax coloring, refactoring, code formatting, and more. Chapter 3 - Code Completion and Templates This chapter covers several important time-saving features NetBeans provides programmers: code completion, code templates, and file templates. Chapter 4 - Debugging Debugging code is one of the most frequently performed activities developers do while writing code. Chapter 5 - Managing Version Control This chapter covers working with CVS, Subversion, and the new Local History feature. Chapter 6 - Generating and Accessing Javadoc This chapter describes the NetBeans features for creating and working with Javadoc. Chapter 7 - Managing Builds with Ant and Maven In this chapter, we explore how Ant and Maven work with NetBeans. Chapter 8 - JUnit Testing This chapter makes the general assumption that you write a class and then write a test. Chapter 10 - Code-Quality Tools This chapter reviews the NetBeans plugins available for managing code quality in your Java projects. Chapter 11 - Developing JRuby/Ruby on Rails Applications For me, the most exciting new feature of NetBeans 6 is its support for Ruby and the Ruby on Rails framework. Chapter 12 - Developing Web Applications This chapter focuses on providing an overview to each type of web application tool available while highlighting the updated and new features available in NetBeans 6. Chapter 13 - Developing Web Services: JAX-WS, SOA, BPEL, and RESTful Chapter 14 - Developing GUI Applications In this chapter we review how to create, develop, and build a simple GUI application. Chapter 15 - Developing Rich Client Applications The benefits of using the NetBeans Platform, the full range of features it provides, practical steps for getting started, and a demo of a complete application are covered in this chapter.
